40% of the energy used in the race will be generated through regenerative braking. Thus, the Gen3 will be the first formula car without rear hydraulic brakes.
Formula E and the Federation Internationale de l’automobile (FIA) present the third generation of electric racing cars (Gen3) touted as the most efficient in the world. This car will be used in the 9th season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in 2022.
The Gen3 electric race car was introduced by FIA President Jean Todt as a machine created at the intersection of high performance, efficiency and sustainability.
In a statement on their website page, Formula E claims the new car, as the most efficient racing car in the world. Where at least 40% of the energy used in the race will be generated through regenerative braking. Thus, the Gen3 will be the first formula car without rear hydraulic brakes.
The Gen3 is also the first formula racing car to use both front and rear powertrains. With a powertrain of 350kW at the rear and complemented by 250kW at the front, it brings a total powertrain of 600kW.
The Gen3 will more than double the regenerative capabilities of previous Formula E racing cars.
Another advantage of Gen3, also at a smaller size and much lighter weight than Gen2. By so making cars it is believed that it will be possible to present faster and more agile races
Carrying an electric motor that can produce up to 350kw (470BHP) of power, the Gen3 is capable of reaching a top speed of up to 200mph (320 km/h), with a power-to-weight ratio that is twice as efficient as the equivalent 470bhp internal combustion engine (ICE).
“In designing the Gen3 car, we wanted to show that high performance, efficiency and sustainability can coexist without compromise,” said Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E.
With these specifications Gen3 is expected to maintain the status of Formula E racing as the first sport to be certified as net-zero carbon since its inception.
Reigle hopes the Gen3 will inspire and excite the next generation of motorsport fans in cities around the world from Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, which kicks off its first race in Diriya, Saudi Arabia, on Jan.28.
After its introduction, the Formula E Gen3 electric racing car itself will only be delivered to the manufacturers of each race participant in the spring of 2022.
