Prince of Cambodia involved in fatal car crash, cops launched investigation

The accident happened between a BMW X3 SUV and a Toyota Highlander. The prince of Cambodia suffered a severe head injury, while the other passenger, his wife, unfortunately, did not make it.

At 10 am (local time) on June 17, 2018, on Highway 4, the part that goes through Prey Nop district, Preah Sihanouk province, Cambodia, a serious accident occurred between two cars. In particular, there is a luxury BMW X3 SUV carrying the family of the Prince family, Mr. Ranariddh and Mrs. Ouk Phalla.


An improper overtaking of a taxi crashed into the BMW

According to the Head of provincial police of Preah Sihanouk, Mr. Chuon Narin, when the silver BMW X3 was traveling on Highway 4, heading for Sihanoukville in the southwest of Cambodia. A 7-seat Toyota Highlander taxi driver suddenly attempted to overtake at the opposite lane and collided directly with the BMW X3.

The collision was so severe that it sent the Cambodian Prince and his wife right to a hospital in Sihanoukville. Due to severe injuries, Ouk Phalla, the wife of Prince Ranariddh did not make it through and died at the hospital at 12:20 pm on the same day.

The Cambodian Prince has been transferred to another hospital in the capital Phnom Penh to better treat his head injuries. Moreover, the accident also injured 6 people on the Highlander, 2 drivers and 4 unfortunate passengers inside.


The crash left two car severely damaged

At the scene of the accident, both cars were severely damaged. In particular, the Toyota Highlander suffered a broken front axle and the right chassis was absolutely deformed. The windshield, as well as the front of the 7-seater SUV, is crushed and the bonnet was twisted. The rear bumper of the Toyota Highlander seemed like it could fall off at any time.

Meanwhile, the BMW X3's right front tire exploded and the front fender got deformed. The head was almost crumpled and the bonnet was folded multiple times.


Prince Ranariddh and King Norodom Sihamoni are sons of former King Norodom Sihanouk

Prince Ranariddh is the eldest son of former Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk. At the same time, he shares his father with King Norodom Sihamoni, who's currently in power. Prince Ranariddh served as Prime Minister of Cambodia for four years after his party won the election held by United Nations in 1993. Ranariddh is currently the president of the FUNCINPEC party, which holds 41 seats in the Cambodian Parliament.
